Nijkerk calls for infrastructure investment after A28 closure

The municipality of Nijkerk is calling for increased government investment in infrastructure following recent disruptions caused by the closure of the A28 highway and the Arkervaart waterway. The closures resulted in increased traffic on alternative routes, longer travel times, and challenges for local businesses and emergency services.

Marleen van den Nieuwendijk, a municipal alderman, emphasized that the situation highlights the necessity of reliable infrastructure. She noted that the municipality felt the direct impact on residents commuting to work, entrepreneurs maintaining accessibility, and emergency responders requiring rapid transit.

The municipality has urged the national cabinet to prioritize infrastructure maintenance, replacement, and expansion in the upcoming Miljoenennota. Officials warned that many bridges and viaducts are approaching the end of their technical lifespans, while increasing pressure from housing development, economic growth, and defense needs continues to strain the road network.
