Nijmegen authorities inspect Splendorfabriek over safety violations
The municipality of Nijmegen has conducted a large-scale inspection of the Splendorfabriek, a former lightbulb factory on Sint Annastraat, due to safety concerns. The building houses approximately 130 businesses and two residences.
Following inspections in March and April of this year, several violations were identified regarding fire safety, structural integrity, and construction standards. Although the owner, Marcel Vermeer, was given the opportunity to rectify these issues through an enforcement process, the municipality determined that the steps taken were insufficient.
On Monday, October 19, 2026, the fire department and municipal employees performed an additional inspection to obtain an up-to-date assessment of the safety risks. While the municipality noted that enforcement measures could lead to the partial or total cessation of use of the building, they emphasized that the safety of residents and workers remains the priority.
Vermeer has attributed the ongoing issues to unclear regulatory changes and poor communication from the municipality. He stated that he is waiting for clarity on specific requirements to proceed with necessary modifications, noting that a required permit has not yet been granted.
