Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad suspended from Parti BERSAMA following JAIS detention

Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, a former Malaysian minister and leader of Parti BERSAMA Malaysia, has been suspended from all official party activities for three months, effective from 20 October 2026 to 19 January 2027. The decision follows his detention by the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) on 15 October 2026 in Petaling Jaya on suspicion of 'khalwat' (close proximity).

Nik Nazmi confirmed his involvement via social media, explaining that he and a woman—believed to be an NGO founder—were in an enclosed space discussing a project after moving from a studio in Brickfields. While he admitted to a lapse in judgment, he maintained that no improper or indecent acts occurred. He has issued apologies to his wife, family, and party supporters.

The Selangor Islamic Religious Council (MAIS) has defended the enforcement action, stating that JAIS acted on an official complaint and is conducting a thorough investigation according to the Syariah Criminal Offences (Selangor) Enactment 1995. The party stated the suspension is necessary to preserve its integrity and public credibility.
