Nikaia Hospital maternity clinic faces critical staffing shortages

The Association of Hospital Doctors of Athens-Piraeus (EINAP) has issued a warning regarding the critical state of the Obstetrics-Gynecology Clinic at Nikaia Hospital. According to the association, only five out of 15 permanent midwife positions are currently filled, including the head of the department.

Staff exhaustion is a major concern, with reports of up to 90 accumulated unpaid days off. The clinic's director recently requested a suspension of maternity services until sufficient personnel can be secured. The existing staff is currently tasked with managing hospitalized patients, deliveries, the maternity ward, and surgical operations simultaneously.

The situation is further complicated by the fact that one of the hospital's three internal medicine clinics has remained closed for months due to understaffing, forcing medical patients to be treated within the maternity clinic. EINAP is demanding the immediate filling of all vacant midwife positions with permanent staff to ensure safe operations.
