Nike and athletic brands face market shifts and S&P 100 exit

The athletic footwear and apparel sector is facing significant shifts as traditional giants like Nike and adidas face increased competition from emerging disruptor brands. Analysts at BMO Capital Markets have initiated an “Underperform” rating on several major players, including Nike, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Deckers Outdoor, and Lululemon Athletica, citing a potential end to the decade-long athletic cycle.

Market analysts suggest that consumer preferences are shifting away from casual sneakers and athleisure toward “brown shoe” or dressier styles. This trend, combined with weakening consumer demand, sticky inflation, and rising costs, has created a cautious outlook for the sector through 2027.

Nike specifically is experiencing a period of volatility. The company is set to drop out of the S&P 100 index this month for the first time in nearly 18 years, following a significant decline in market value. This downturn follows a period where the brand has faced criticism regarding its market positioning and a perceived shift in its core identity.
