Nike faces structural decline as Goldman Sachs downgrades stock

Goldman Sachs has downgraded Nike's stock from ‘Neutral’ to ‘Sell’, significantly reducing its price target from $49.00 to $27.50. Analysts suggest the company is facing a structural decline in its market position rather than just temporary quarterly weakness.

Key challenges include a struggling sportswear category and intense competition from niche brands with lower entry barriers. The company's performance in China has been particularly severe, with sales dropping by 26 percent in July and August. Nike expects a high single-digit percentage decline in annual revenue.

While earnings per share have slightly exceeded expectations, the overall revenue outlook remains weak. The company is currently undergoing restructuring and inventory management, but analysts question whether these measures can restore long-term growth and market dominance.
