Nike to exit S&P 100 index following massive market value decline
Nike will be removed from the S&P 100 index on September 21, 2026, after 18 years of inclusion. The decision follows a massive decline in the company's market value, which has dropped approximately 80% from its November 2021 peak. The company's market capitalization has fallen from roughly $281 billion to approximately $57 billion.
Financial reports indicate that Nike's total revenue for fiscal year 2026 stood at $46.4 billion, a slight decrease, while net profit reached $3.11 billion. The company faces significant challenges in the Chinese market, where sales fell by 17% in the fourth quarter of 2026. Additionally, Nike is facing increased competition from brands such as Anta, Li-Ning, On, and Hoka.
To maintain its presence in the broader S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average, Nike is attempting a turnaround under CEO Elliott Hill, focusing on core sports categories and repairing relationships with wholesale partners. Palo Alto Networks is set to replace Nike in the S&P 100.
