Nike unveils Apex marathon racing shoe with double-stacked Air Zoom units

Nike has announced the introduction of the Apex, a new pinnacle marathon racing shoe designed to advance its race-day footwear system. The lineup also includes the Alphafly 4 and the Swooshfly, which is aimed at runners seeking an accessible introduction to carbon-plated footwear.

The Apex features several technical innovations, most notably a double-stacked Air Zoom unit configuration under the forefoot. This design, combined with a redesigned carbon fiber Flyplate and new ZoomX LT foam, is claimed to provide up to 40 percent more energy return than the Alphafly 3 while weighing more than 10 percent less.

Technically, the shoe utilizes a 40-millimeter stack height at both the heel and forefoot to create a zero-drop geometry. The outsole incorporates Goatek and Fast Shot rubber technologies for traction and durability, while the upper is constructed from lightweight Flyknit X fabric. The Apex is scheduled to become available in January 2027.
