Niki Kerameus outlines three challenges for the European labor market
Greek Minister of Labour and Social Security Niki Kerameus identified three primary challenges facing the European labor market during an intervention at the Employment, Social Policy, Inclusion and Equality Council (EPSCO) in Luxembourg.
The three identified challenges are skills mismatch, rapid technological changes, and health and safety concerns. Kerameus noted that Europe is currently grappling with a shortage of human resources and demographic pressures, issues that are being intensified by the integration of artificial intelligence.
To address the skills gap, Kerameus advocated for better, earlier, and data-driven training. She highlighted Greece’s use of market diagnosis mechanisms to create targeted vocational training programs and suggested that at the European level, there should be increased investment in the European Skills Observatory. She emphasized the need to map skill requirements, ensure the interoperability of national forecasting mechanisms, and align vocational education with international needs. Regarding technology, she noted that while artificial intelligence offers significant potential for productivity and innovation, the challenge lies in unlocking these capabilities effectively.
