Niki Lauda wins 1984 Formula 1 World Championship by half a point
In 1984, Niki Lauda secured his third Formula 1 World Championship in what remains the closest title race in the sport's history. Lauda won the title by a margin of only half a point over his McLaren teammate, Alain Prost.
The championship was decided following a race in Monte Carlo that was stopped after three-quarters of the distance, resulting in half-points being awarded to the drivers. While Prost won the final race, Lauda's second-place finish was sufficient to clinch the title, rendering Prost's victory insufficient to overcome the points gap.
