Nikšić reports rise in suicide rates
Psychiatrist Dr. Borislav Mišo Đurišić has linked a rise in suicide rates in Nikšić, Montenegro, to economic hardship and a lack of local prospects. Between the beginning of the year and October 1, Nikšić recorded 15 suicides, which is eight more than the total for the previous year.
According to police data, 65 suicides were registered across Montenegro during the same period, meaning nearly one in four suicides in the country occurred in Nikšić. Dr. Đurišić noted that many residents leave the city due to unemployment, while those who remain often face poverty and depression.
Official data indicates that 80 percent of suicides in Nikšić this year were committed by men, compared to a national average of nearly 90 percent. Dr. Đurišić suggested that men in traditional environments may feel increased pressure to act as the primary provider, leading to distress when they are unable to meet these expectations.
