Nikita Mazepin wins race at Spa following FIA rule changes

Former Formula 1 driver Nikita Mazepin has returned to competitive racing at Spa-Francorchamps, winning the opening race of the Spezial Tourenwagen Trophy. Driving a Mercedes-AMG GT3, Mazepin secured pole position and topped the Friday practice session before claiming victory in his first European appearance since 2021.

This comeback follows a recent decision by the FIA to ease restrictions on Russian and Belarusian drivers. Previously, these competitors were required to sign a commitment to neutrality and were prohibited from displaying national symbols, colors, or flags. Under the new regulations, drivers from these nations may once again compete under their national identity, including the use of anthems and national colors, provided the competition is not held within Russia or Belarus.

Mazepin’s professional racing career was interrupted in 2022 when his contract with the Haas F1 team was terminated following the Russian invasion of Ukraine and subsequent international sanctions. While the FIA has removed the neutrality requirement, the governing body stated it will continue to monitor the situation in Ukraine and reserves the right to implement further measures if necessary.
