Nikola Grmoja disputes SOA reporting duties over hazardous waste

Nikola Grmoja, President of the Most party and Chairman of the Parliamentary Judiciary Committee, has accused Justice Minister Damir Habijan of concealing the Security and Intelligence Agency's (SOA) obligations. The dispute centers on whether SOA is required to inform state leadership about significant security threats, such as the suspected illegal disposal of hazardous waste in Lika, even when criminal investigations are underway.

Grmoja argues that under Articles 55 and 56 of the Law, SOA must inform both the state leadership regarding security assessments and the prosecution regarding criminal suspicions. He specifically highlighted concerns regarding the suspected international trafficking of hazardous waste, potentially linked to the Italian waste mafia, noting that authorities were allegedly aware of issues in Gospić as early as 2022.

Minister Habijan countered by stating that when criminal offenses are suspected, SOA is legally mandated to report to prosecution bodies rather than state leadership. He dismissed Grmoja's claims as baseless. In response, MP Nikola Mažar criticized Grmoja, suggesting his position is contradictory regarding the independence of judicial institutions and political oversight.
