Nikola Jokic postpones contract signing, Nuggets say they trust his decision

Denver Nuggets star Nikola Jokic has confirmed he will wait until the summer of 2027 before agreeing to a new contract extension. By delaying, he aims to become eligible for a five‑year maximum deal worth roughly $359.5 million, considerably larger than the four‑year extension currently on the market. Jokic described the move as “strictly business‑oriented” and reiterated his wish to finish his career in Denver.

Nuggets executive vice‑president of player personnel Jon Wallace responded on ESPN’s Summer League broadcast, stating, “We feel confident… We trust him. … We’ve got no choice but to.” Wallace emphasized that the organization remains confident in Jokic and will continue to focus on roster decisions and the team’s championship window while the contract discussion is postponed.

The delay does not affect Jokic’s current contract, which runs through the 2026‑27 season and includes a $62.8 million player option for 2027‑28. Analysts project that signing the later super‑max could raise Jokic’s career earnings to about $724 million.
