Nikolas Farantouris meets Egyptian EU Ambassador regarding Saint Catherine's Monastery

European Parliament Member Nikolas Farantouris met with Egypt’s Ambassador to the EU, Ahmed Abu Zeid, in Brussels to discuss Egypt-EU relations and the status of Saint Catherine’s Monastery in Sinai.

Farantouris emphasized Egypt’s role as a key partner for Europe regarding regional stability, energy security, migration management, and freedom of navigation in the Eastern Mediterranean. A primary focus of the meeting was the protection of Saint Catherine’s Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the world’s oldest operating Christian monastery.

The MEP stressed the importance of preserving the monastery’s historical and religious character, as well as its ownership status and institutional rights. He noted that the issue should be addressed in a manner that strengthens, rather than weakens, the strategic relationships between Egypt and both the European Union and Greece.
