Nikolas Farantouris seeks EU stance on Mecca Agreement

Greek MEP Nikolas Farantouris has called on European Commission Vice-President Kaja Kallas to provide an official position regarding the ‘Mecca Agreement’ involving Turkey, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia.

Announced in early August, the agreement is described as a major diplomatic development in the Middle East. Known pillars of the deal include a mutual assistance clause and the promotion of joint military-industrial projects. The agreement links Turkey, a Euro-Atlantic member, with Pakistan, a nuclear-armed Muslim state, and Saudi Arabia, a dominant power in the Gulf.

Farantouris raised concerns regarding the agreement's impact on the balance of power in the Eastern Mediterranean and its compatibility with the EU's new security and defense architecture. His request follows reports suggesting the European Commission has reacted positively to the pact, despite the full contents of the agreement remaining undisclosed.
