Nikolas Ferreira faces backlash over Northeast Brazil video

Federal Deputy Nikolas Ferreira (PL-MG) is facing intense criticism following the release of a video titled ‘O Nordeste que foi esquecido’ (The Forgotten Northeast). The video, which features residents expressing dissatisfaction with basic services and the federal government, has surpassed 146 million views on Instagram despite its audio being removed due to copyright claims involving singer Rubel.

Critics and social media users have accused the production of being staged. Leaked behind-the-scenes footage allegedly shows a director instructing the crew to hide modern amenities, such as a satellite dish, to maintain a specific aesthetic of poverty. Additionally, Pernambuco Deputy Pedro Campos contested the authenticity of the video, noting that one of the featured individuals reportedly owns a modern vehicle and lives in a well-furnished home.

The controversy has drawn responses from various political figures and influencers. While Elon Musk congratulated Ferreira on the video, other influencers and politicians have defended the region and the administration of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, arguing that the video misrepresents the socio-economic reality of the Northeast.
