Nikolas Matinpalo suffers upper-body injury following boarding penalty

Ottawa Senators defenseman Nikolas Matinpalo exited a game against the New Jersey Devils on Monday night with an upper-body injury. The incident occurred midway through the first period when Matinpalo was hit from behind by Devils forward Anthony Mantha while attempting to win a puck battle near the New Jersey bench.

Following a video review, officials assessed Mantha a five-minute major penalty for boarding. Matinpalo lost his balance and struck the boards head-first. While the Senators announced before the second period that Matinpalo would not return, Mantha remained in the game after serving his penalty. The Senators were unable to score during the extended power play.
