Nikole Hannah-Jones regrets enrolling daughter in Brooklyn public schools

Nikole Hannah-Jones, the journalist behind the 1619 Project, has expressed regret over her decision to enroll her daughter in low-income, predominantly Black public schools in Brooklyn. Hannah-Jones stated in a New York Times Magazine essay that she and her husband, Faraji, chose these schools a decade ago to challenge educational segregation and support the collective good rather than seeking individual advantage through private or elite options.

However, Hannah-Jones admitted that the decision resulted in her 16-year-old daughter, Najya, falling significantly behind her peers academically. The daughter reportedly expressed feelings of betrayal, questioning why her parents chose not to use their financial resources to provide a better education. While Hannah-Jones acknowledged that her daughter “deserved better,” her husband defended the decision as a necessary act of social resistance.

This personal reflection has sparked broader debates regarding school choice, educational equity, and the impact of ideological advocacy on individual family outcomes.
