Nikole Hannah-Jones sparks debate over NYC public school quality

Journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones, author of ‘The 1619 Project’, has drawn significant scrutiny following her decision to enroll her daughter in a local Brooklyn public school to highlight systemic educational inequalities. Hannah-Jones stated the decision was made a decade ago to challenge New York City’s unequal school system, but the family has since moved her to a private school after the student expressed concerns regarding the quality of her education.

Reports regarding the specific school, PS 307, describe a chaotic environment characterized by low reading proficiency rates, unassigned homework, and inaccurate grading. Critics have targeted Hannah-Jones’s decision as a failure to prioritize her child’s academic needs, while others have used her experience to highlight dysfunction within the New York City Department of Education.

Further allegations suggest that NYC Schools Chancellor Kamar Samuels, during his tenure as superintendent of District 13, was aware of parental complaints regarding Principal Stephanie Carroll’s leadership but failed to take action. Despite calls for her removal, Carroll was later promoted to a citywide director role within the Department of Education.
