A large wildfire in the municipality of Agios Vasileios, Crete, has destroyed homes, businesses, farms and municipal infrastructure. Two firefighters lost their lives. Mayor Giannis Tatarakis presented an initial damage assessment and said the municipality will accelerate damage recording, compensation and reconstruction once the fire is fully extinguished.

All August cultural events were cancelled as a sign of respect for the fallen firefighters and the affected residents. Local businesses, including the Rethymno Hospitality Association, Lidl Greece and the Rethymno Pharmaceutical Association, supplied food, water and medical supplies to firefighters.

Political leaders visited the site: New Democracy political committee secretary Konstantinos Kyranakis and former minister Giannis Kefalogiannis inspected the damage and pledged rapid state support; PASOK president Nikos Androulakes also toured the area, emphasizing solidarity and the need for swift assistance.
