Nikos Galis retires from professional basketball

Nikos Galis, a legendary figure in Greek basketball, announced his retirement from professional play in the mid-1990s, marking the end of a career that significantly elevated the sport in Greece.

His departure from Panathinaikos followed internal tensions, specifically involving coach Kostas Politis. The decision was precipitated by an incident where Galis was not utilized during a game against Ampelokipoi. Galis expressed his decision through a statement, noting his desire to leave the sport on his own terms, though he admitted to feeling bitter about the circumstances of his exit.

Following his announcement, Galis moved to Thessaloniki, and Panathinaikos subsequently terminated his contract a month later.
