Nikos Karvelas disputes being called the soundtrack of Greek decadence

During the premiere of the television program ‘Ano Kato Koinonia’ on Thursday, September 17, a heated disagreement occurred between composer Nikos Karvelas and host Konstantinos Bogdanos.

The tension began when Bogdanos introduced Karvelas by stating that, for some, the musician is ‘perhaps the soundtrack of Greek decadence.’ Karvelas immediately challenged this characterization, calling it a personal assessment rather than a reflection of public opinion. He argued that his extensive body of work—including compositions such as ‘Daemones,’ ‘Mala,’ and ‘The Bells of Edelweiss,’ as well as his poetry and philosophy—contradicts such a label.

Despite Bogdanos attempting to clarify that he had used the term ‘soundtrack,’ Karvelas remained firm, rejecting both the idea of being a ‘soundtrack’ or a ‘personification of decadence.’ He concluded the exchange by stating, ‘I may be anything else except decadence. I am peak [akmi].’
