Nikos Papas vows to fight water and university privatisation in Greece

Greek opposition MP Nikos Papas criticised the government’s draft law that would allow further privatisation of water services and the expansion of private universities. He told ERTnews that the proposal “will open a new window for water price hikes that could be disastrous for households and dangerous for agricultural production”.

Papas warned that the administration is “building on the assets and infrastructure of municipal water utilities to increase the share capital of the public companies EYDAP and EUATH”, effectively paving the way for higher tariffs. He said SYRIZA will remain in parliament to “give battle against this initiative” and contrasted it with the party’s push for a constitutional revision.

He also stressed that tertiary education must stay public, rejecting any move toward private universities and arguing that every child should have free access to higher education. The MP linked the party’s electoral preparation to a broader fight against neoliberal reforms, urging a strong modern left to confront these policies.
