Nikos Papathanasis addresses Greek housing and EU budget plans
Nikos Papathanasis, the Deputy Minister of National Economy and Finance, has addressed several key economic issues in Greece, including housing, inflation, and European budgetary negotiations.
Regarding the housing market, Papathanasis rejected claims that the government’s ‘My Home’ program is responsible for a 30% increase in property prices. He stated that the initiative has successfully enabled 24,000 families to purchase homes. He also noted that while inflation has impacted purchasing power, Greece's economic position has improved, with a growth rate more than double the European average.
On the international front, Papathanasis discussed the ongoing and complex negotiations for the new European Union budget. He highlighted the importance of maintaining cohesion policy resources to support weaker economies. He announced that the national program for the 2026-2030 period is set at 23 billion euros, and projected that total national and European resources available to Greece will exceed 100 billion euros by 2034. Additionally, he noted that while the government is considering interventions for the energy crisis, fiscal surpluses are subject to strict European fiscal rules regarding new spending.
