Nikos Tachiaos updates on Thessaloniki Metro and Athens construction damage
Greek Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Nikos Tachiaos has provided updates on major metro projects in Thessaloniki and Athens. In Thessaloniki, preparations for the metro expansion toward the Northwest are in an advanced stage. While the long-term 30-year expansion plan is complete, current efforts focus on updating station locations and tunnel alignments through preliminary works. A cost-benefit study to ensure the project's viability is expected to conclude by the end of 2026. Additionally, plans are underway to integrate the metro with the OASTH bus network through interoperable electronic ticketing systems, including ‘tap and pay’ capabilities for credit and debit cards.
Regarding the Athens Metro Line 4 construction, Tachiaos addressed concerns in the Kypseli neighborhood, where residents reported damage to buildings caused by tunnel excavation. The Deputy Minister assured citizens that the state and Elliniko Metro are committed to fully restoring any damaged properties. He emphasized that tunneling operations will only resume once there is certainty that they will not further impact surrounding structures. Tachiaos noted that the contractor is contractually obligated to address damages and that specialized engineers are working to mitigate risks in the urban environment.
