Nikos Tsafos calls for re-evaluating Europe's energy security

Greek Deputy Minister of Energy Nikos Tsafos has called for a fundamental re-examination of Europe's energy security architecture following an informal meeting of energy ministers in Dublin. Tsafos noted that the current system was designed for an era characterized by cheaper energy and infrequent supply disruptions, which no longer reflects the modern reality.

Tsafos highlighted that the European energy system has faced intense pressure over the last six months, evidenced by rising prices for gasoline, diesel, natural gas, and electricity. He emphasized the need for greater collective European action to diagnose problems and find solutions rather than relying solely on individual national measures.

Addressing industrial concerns, Tsafos pointed out that the European Union has lost 15% of its refining capacity over the past two decades, leading to shortages in products such as diesel and aviation fuel. He also expressed uncertainty regarding whether the current goal of filling European natural gas storage remains necessary in the evolving landscape.
