Niksar walnut harvest begins in Tokat with 2,000-ton yield expected

The walnut harvest has commenced in the Niksar district of Tokat, Turkey. Producers are expecting a high yield of approximately 2,000 tons of the geographically indicated Niksar walnut, often referred to as ‘white gold’.

This year’s harvest follows significant losses experienced last year due to frost damage. Farmers are utilizing specialized machinery attached to tractors to shake the trees via vibration, after which the walnuts are collected, separated from their green shells, and dried in sunny areas to prepare for sale.

Local producer Halis Yılmaz noted that both the quality and yield are high compared to the previous year. He emphasized the importance of maintaining the unique aroma of the Niksar walnut, which received its geographical indication status in 2010, and stated that producers aim to adhere to these standards to support the local economy.
