Nikumaroro expedition searching for Amelia Earhart's plane faces weather delays
A 17-member research expedition attempting to locate Amelia Earhart's missing aircraft has encountered significant delays due to severe weather. The team is operating on the remote Pacific atoll of Nikumaroro, part of Kiribati, to investigate a specific site known as the Taraia Object.
The object, which was detected via satellite radar, is located in the atoll's lagoon. Researchers from the Archaeological Legacy Institute, the Purdue Research Foundation, and Purdue University believe the structure could be a remnant of Earhart's Lockheed Electra 10-E. While sonar and magnetometer surveys have already been conducted on the lagoon floor, high waves and rough sea conditions have prevented land-based work for three days.
The expedition aims to use probes and suction dredging to examine objects within the sediment once weather conditions permit. The search is based on the theory that Earhart may have made a forced landing on Nikumaroro during her 1937 attempt to circumnavigate the globe.
