Nilüfer hosts 12th Akçalar-Fadıllı Fig Festival

The 12th Akçalar-Fadıllı Fig Festival was held at the Akçalar lakeside, organized by the Nilüfer Municipality to promote black fig production and support local growers. Nilüfer Mayor Şadi Özdemir noted that while Bursa is a leading region for fig production in Turkey, and Nilüfer specifically expects a 30% increase in yield this year—reaching over 3,000 tons—producers are facing significant economic hardships.

Mayor Özdemir highlighted that rising costs for fertilizer, pesticides, and labor, combined with low market prices, are preventing farmers from receiving fair compensation for their labor. He called for increased central government support for agriculture to protect vital farmland from being converted to industrial or residential use.

The event also featured various competitions, including ‘Best Fig Grower’ and an ‘Fig Flavors Cooking Competition,’ where local participants were awarded prizes for their culinary creations.
