Nilüfer hosts IRAP workshop to develop 2027-2031 disaster risk plans

Nilüfer Municipality and the Bursa Provincial AFAD Directorate co-organized the IRAP (Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Plan) Workshop to develop disaster risk reduction action plans for the 2027-2031 period. The event brought together academics, local government officials, and public institutions to evaluate disaster risks in Bursa and Nilüfer through a holistic approach.

During the workshop, participants discussed the risks posed by Nilüfer’s soil structure and rapidly growing population. Specific proposals were detailed, including the establishment of a disaster logistics center and the creation of earthquake parks in neighborhoods, which would be equipped with containers and essential emergency gear to increase local response capacity.

Nilüfer Mayor Şadi Özdemir highlighted the critical nature of the region's seismic risk, noting that a major earthquake in Bursa would be comparable in scale to an Istanbul earthquake. He emphasized the necessity for the city to strengthen its own local capacity and resources, suggesting that central government and metropolitan resources might be overwhelmed during a large-scale disaster.
