Nilüfer Municipality seeks geographical indication for traditional melon

Nilüfer Municipality in Bursa is preparing to apply for a geographical indication for the ‘Hırsız Almaz Kavunu’ (Thief-Proof Melon). The melon is grown using ancestral seeds passed down through generations and is noted for its high flavor despite its irregular shape.

During a harvest event in the Konaklı neighborhood, Mayor Şadi Özdemir emphasized the importance of supporting local producers through organized structures. He highlighted the establishment of a cooperative in Konaklı to help farmers increase the value of their products through NİLKOOP and other sales points. According to Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) data, approximately 3,282 decares of land in the region are dedicated to melon cultivation.
