Nilüfer Municipality wins two sustainability awards

Nilüfer Municipality has received two awards at the 13th Sustainable Business Awards organized by the Sustainability Academy. The municipality was recognized in the Biodiversity category for its 'Income-Generating Forests: Nature-Based Rural Development Model' and in the Circular Economy Transformation category for its 'Circular Solidarity Model: Wear It If You Are Not Wearing It!' project.

The forest project aims to revitalize unusable public lands through a multi-layered agricultural model. By planting fire-resistant trees like chestnut, linden, and cornus, and growing medicinal plants like salep underneath, the project seeks to boost the rural economy. To date, approximately 700 saplings have been planted in the Güngören and Unçukuru neighborhoods, with plans to expand to six more rural areas and reach 2,000 saplings. Once completed across 42 decares, the project is expected to prevent 15 tons of annual carbon emissions and support women's cooperatives.

The textile project focuses on the reuse and industrial recycling of clothing. This initiative transforms textile waste into social investments, including support for nurseries and medical devices, ensuring that usable garments are kept in circulation for social and environmental benefit.
