NIMASA to automate Nigerian Ship Registry via new digital platform

The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) is set to host a two-part stakeholder webinar on October 6 and 8, 2026, to demonstrate the ongoing automation of the Nigerian Ship Registry. The initiative aims to modernize registration services, improve operational efficiency, and increase the global competitiveness of the Nigerian flag.

The new digital platform will offer 24/7 access to registration services, streamlining application and approval processes while facilitating the faster issuance of electronic certificates. This transition is intended to reduce the administrative delays typically associated with paper-based procedures.

A significant feature of the automated system is the ability to provide secure, real-time tracking of ship mortgages and registry transactions. NIMASA stated this will enhance transparency and provide better visibility for financial institutions and other stakeholders involved in vessel financing.

Dr. Dayo Mobereola, Director-General and CEO of NIMASA, noted that the automation is part of a broader effort to transform the Nigerian flag and create an environment that encourages greater participation in the global shipping industry.
