NIMC denies viral claims of National Identification Number database breach

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has officially denied claims circulating in a viral social media video that Nigeria’s National Identification Number (NIN) database has been breached. NIMC spokesperson Kayode Adegoke stated that the video is a recycled report from 2024 that had already been debunked, and emphasized that the National Identity Database (NIDB) has not been compromised.

To enhance security and privacy, NIMC highlighted its recently launched NIN Authentication (NINAuth) platform. This suite of web, API, and mobile services is designed to allow secure identity verification for services such as SIM registration, tax filings, and financial transactions without exposing raw personal data. The system requires explicit consent from NIN holders before any data is shared for Know Your Customer (KYC) processes.

In response to the recent allegations, NIMC Director-General Abisoye Coker-Odusote has ordered a comprehensive investigation. The probe aims to determine if any tokenization verification agents or their sub-licensees have breached existing licensing agreements.
