NiMet predicts thunderstorms and heavy rain across Nigeria

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a weather outlook predicting widespread cloudy conditions, thunderstorms, and moderate rainfall across Nigeria from Sunday through Tuesday.

In the northern region, sunny skies with patches of clouds are expected, though morning light rains and afternoon thunderstorms are forecasted for states including Kebbi, Sokoto, Zamfara, Kaduna, Borno, Taraba, and Adamawa. The North Central region, including the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Kwara, and Kogi, is expected to experience morning thunderstorms followed by moderate afternoon rains.

The southern region is anticipated to see cloudy skies with morning light rains in parts of Oyo, Delta, Bayelsa, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom, transitioning to moderate rains later in the day across states such as Ondo, Ekiti, Osun, Imo, Abia, Anambra, Enugu, Ebonyi, Edo, Rivers, and others.

NiMet warned that strong winds may precede the downpours and advised the public to take safety precautions, such as disconnecting electrical appliances, staying away from tall trees, and avoiding driving during heavy rain. Airline operators have also been advised to obtain airport-specific weather reports for flight planning.
