NIMS conducts free heart surgeries for 19 children in Hyderabad

Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) in Hyderabad successfully conducted complex congenital heart surgeries on 19 children during its fifth Pediatric Cardiac Surgery Camp. The camp, held from September 6 to 12, was organized by the NIMS Department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery in collaboration with the Healing Little Hearts Organisation and a medical team from the UK.

During the event, more than 1,000 children received outpatient consultations. While 19 underwent surgery, an additional 100 children were advised to undergo future procedures. The surgeries, which can cost between ₹15–20 lakh in private hospitals, were provided free of charge through the Aarogyasri scheme and the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.

The camp also marked the first time ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) services were introduced at NIMS under the Aarogyasri scheme. This lifesaving intervention, which costs approximately ₹2 lakh per day, was fully covered by the government.
