NIMS doctors end strike following security assurances
Resident doctors at Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) in Hyderabad have called off their strike following assurances from hospital management regarding enhanced security measures. The strike was initiated after a junior resident doctor, Dr. K Srikanth, was allegedly verbally abused and threatened by the relatives of a patient in the emergency department.
The incident occurred on September 16 when the doctor was attending to multiple emergency cases. According to the Resident Doctors Association (RDA), patient relatives became aggressive when requested to wait briefly for equipment needed for a procedure. The RDA reported that the relatives used abusive language and issued death threats against the physician.
In response to the strike, NIMS management has agreed to strengthen existing security protocols and implement additional measures to prevent violence against healthcare workers. The hospital has also established a dedicated Security and Safety Committee to review protocols and has registered FIRs in connection with previous incidents of violence reported in August and September.
