Nina Westad withdraws as Conservative mayoral candidate in Trondheim

Nina Westad has withdrawn as the Conservative Party (Høyre) mayoral candidate in Trondheim following intense internal unrest and the publication of controversial private messages. The decision comes one week after her nomination.

The controversy erupted after private messages were made public, including a comment expressing hope that Donald Trump would create a “beach on Gaza” so she could go there to sunbathe. Other messages reportedly showed support for the MAGA movement, stating she was “agreeing with Trump and MAGA in so to say everything,” and included disparaging remarks regarding residents of the Grønland district.

Høyre Secretary General Tom Erlend Skaug had previously requested Westad's resignation, citing views that did not align with the party's principles. Westad stated her withdrawal was made for the sake of her family and the party, noting that she found it impossible to lead amidst “strong opposing forces” within the organization. The fallout has already led to several local party members announcing they will not stand for election in 2027.
