Ninja Theory faces layoffs and potential closure after failed sale deals
Ninja Theory, the Cambridge-based developer of the Hellblade series, has begun facing layoffs and redundancies following the failure of two separate agreements intended to secure the studio's future or facilitate its transition to an independent entity. Xbox Chief Content Officer Matt Booty confirmed that these failed deals have led to a consultation process regarding a proposed closure of the studio.
Multiple employees, including technical directors, gameplay programmers, and sound designers, have publicly confirmed their departures or redundancy status via LinkedIn. Affected roles span various departments, including audio, art, programming, and performance capture. The uncertainty surrounding the studio's stability has also cast doubt on the future of its upcoming title, Senua, which was announced for a 2027 release.
These developments occur amidst a broader restructuring within Microsoft's gaming division, which has seen significant workforce reductions across various studios.
