Ninove officials propose new measures to combat illegal dumping
The city administration of Ninove is seeking new methods to combat illegal dumping. Proposed measures include increasing fines, deploying community wardens, enhancing camera surveillance, and conducting anonymous checks.
One notable proposal suggests that individuals who receive fines for illegal dumping but fail to pay could be required to perform litter cleanup as a penalty. This follows significant resident feedback regarding the persistent issue of waste appearing in various parts of the city and its sub-municipalities.
Regarding the controversial removal of 61 public trash cans, Environment Alderman Werner Somers stated that the decision was part of a Mooimakers project based on objective criteria. Evaluations showed some bins were underutilized or contained excessive household waste, and an ongoing assessment is determining the next steps.
