Nintendo and Fan Developers Release New Remakes of Classic Video Games
Shigeru Miyamoto explained that Nintendo’s recent remakes, including a new Star Fox title and the upcoming Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, aim to make older games more playable and give younger players a chance to experience classics. He said, “The young people of today have no opportunity to play games from ten years ago, so remaking them makes them accessible and can inspire future projects.”
Separately, fan developer Steve McCrea, known as “Kweepa,” completed a Unity‑engine remake of the 1992 dungeon‑crawler Ultima Underworld: The Stygian Abyss after more than a decade of work. The project replaces original sprite graphics with fully modeled 3D characters and environments while preserving the original’s pixel‑style look. The remake was praised by original series producer Warren Spector on LinkedIn.
