Nintendo weighs Switch 2 OLED upgrade amid cost and supply concerns

Nintendo is reportedly evaluating a Switch 2 model with an OLED display. Sources cited by ZDNet Korea and other tech outlets say the company is in early talks with Samsung Display to supply a Full‑HD OLED panel that would replace the current LCD screen. Development could begin by the end of 2026, with mass production slated for late 2027 or early 2028. The upgrade would bring deeper blacks, higher contrast and more vivid colours, while retaining the 1080p resolution, 120 Hz refresh rate and HDR support of the existing hardware.

The move is complicated by rising component costs. OLED panels are significantly more expensive than LCDs, and the broader semiconductor shortage has already forced Nintendo to raise the Switch 2 price by about €200. Analysts note that the higher price could limit the console’s market reach, especially as the overall console market is projected to contract in 2026 because of the same supply‑chain pressures. Nintendo has not confirmed the plan, and the final decision will weigh the potential sales boost against the risk of a pricier product.

If approved, the OLED version would arrive roughly three to four years after the original Switch 2 launch, mirroring the timeline of the first Switch’s OLED revision.
