Nintendo expands Mario lore with new storybooks in Switch re-releases
Nintendo has increased the narrative content of its Super Mario franchise. In the recent Switch re-releases of Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2, the company added new storybooks that introduce additional plot details. One storybook follows the Luma twins Mari and Lu, whose separation leads Lu to become the character Lubba, whose gender was changed to female in non‑Japanese localizations. The added chapters also provide more background for characters such as Rosalina. These updates show Nintendo’s growing focus on expanding Mario lore beyond the traditional gameplay premise of Bowser kidnapping Princess Peach.
The changes accompany the broader trend of Nintendo incorporating more story elements into recent Mario titles, including titles like Donkey Kong Bananza and Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, reflecting a shift toward richer narrative experiences within the series.
