Nintendo sees record hardware sales and market dominance
Nintendo continues to see significant success with its hardware and expanding media presence. The Nintendo Switch 2 has reportedly become the fastest-selling video game hardware in US history, reaching nearly 20 million units sold within a year of its release. Despite hardware price increases, the company maintains momentum driven by first-party hits like Pokémon.
Beyond hardware, Nintendo is expanding into Hollywood. Following the billion-dollar success of The Super Mario Movie, the company is collaborating with Sony Pictures on a The Legend of Zelda film scheduled for release in late April. Devon Pritchard, COO of Nintendo of America, stated that the company is “just at the beginning” of the Switch 2 era.
In Japan, industry analyst Dr. Serkan Toto of Kantan Games suggests that Nintendo has effectively saved the Japanese console market. Toto argues that without the success of the Switch, the market might have been “completely eliminated” as players shifted toward smartphones and PCs. Nintendo currently holds a 70 percent market share for gaming content in the Japanese console segment.
