Nintendo shares jump 7% on strong Pokémon Pokopia sales

Nintendo shares rose 7% in Japan following the announcement that the video game ‘Pokémon Pokopia’ has sold over 5 million units on the Switch 2 console. The milestone was reached within four months of its March 5 release, making it the second best-selling title on the platform, trailing only ‘Mario Kart World’.

Despite the success of the Pokémon spin-off, Nintendo faces challenges with its hardware. Rising memory chip prices forced a price increase for the Switch 2, contributing to a 34.4% year-on-year decline in console sales for the second quarter of 2026, with 3.82 million units sold through June. The company forecasts 16.5 million Switch 2 sales for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2027, which remains lower than the previous year's figures. To sustain momentum, Nintendo has announced expansion packs and updates for ‘Pokémon Pokopia’ to retain its player base.
