Nintendo Switch 2 hardware revision released in Europe

Nintendo has begun rolling out a revised version of the Nintendo Switch 2 in the European market. The primary hardware change is a redesigned internal structure that allows users to replace the console's battery more easily. This update appears to be a proactive response to upcoming European battery regulations set to take effect in early 2027.

According to teardowns and comparisons by YouTuber Nintendúo, the new model is approximately 10 to 14 grams heavier than the original version. The battery capacity has seen a minor decrease from 5,220 mAh to 5,172 mAh, a reduction of less than 1% that is expected to impact playtime by only a few minutes.

Key identifiers for the new revision include a serial number starting with ‘HLE’ (instead of ‘HAE’), an ‘OSM’ code on the packaging, and visible screws on the Joy-Con rails. The internal redesign removes the heat shield that previously covered the battery, eliminating the need to manage thermal paste during a replacement. While the hardware is easier to maintain, Nintendo notes that the changes do not alter the core functionality of the console.
