Nintendo Switch 2 receives hardware revision with replaceable battery
Nintendo has begun rolling out a hardware revision of the Nintendo Switch 2, primarily designed to comply with upcoming European Union battery regulations set for February 2027. The updated model features a user-replaceable battery design, which aims to improve long-term maintainability and reduce the need for professional servicing.
Teardowns of the new revision conducted by technicians reveal that while the internal architecture has seen minor changes—including a revised motherboard (OSM-CPU-01), a different fan model, and a change in the 12GB RAM supplier—the core performance remains unchanged. The device continues to use the same NVIDIA system-on-chip.
Notably, the revision does not include the rumored improved Sharp LCD panel. Instead, the console retains the original Innolux LCD panel, meaning the display performance and potential issues like ghosting remain the same. The new battery capacity is slightly lower at 5,172 mAh compared to the previous 5,220 mAh, and the overall weight of the unit has increased by approximately 10 grams. While the rollout is focused on Europe to meet regulatory standards, the revision is also expected to be distributed in other regions, including South Africa.
