Nintendo Switch 2 marks strong first year with robust sales, new titles and hardware‑driven game design

Nintendo’s Switch 2, launched on 5 June 2025, has sold 19.86 million units worldwide as of 31 March 2026 and generated 14.7 million copies of its flagship title Mario Kart World. The console’s upgraded hardware – a 7.9‑inch 1080p 120 Hz LCD, NVIDIA Tegra T239 chip, 12 GB RAM and 4K docked output – is enabling first‑party developers to fill screens with dense visuals and maintain high framerates. Titles such as Donkey Kong Bananza, Hyrule Warriors : Age of Imprisonment, Kirby Air Riders and Mario Tennis Fever illustrate this shift, with Polygon noting the ability to “battle hundreds of enemies on screen simultaneously without slowdown.”

The software lineup is expanding rapidly. Nintendo’s Japanese eShop schedule for the week of 30 July 2026 lists dozens of new releases, including Xenoblade Chronicles 2 – Switch 2 Edition, Village in the Shade and several original titles. In Italy, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 debuted second on the eShop chart, behind the newly released Splatoon Raiders.

Splatoon Raiders, Nintendo’s first single‑player‑focused entry in the series, launched on 23 July 2026. Critics are divided: Nintendo Life praised it as “possibly the most variable and exciting game the series has ever offered,” while The Guardian called it “pedestrian.” The game marks a significant gameplay shift from the franchise’s traditional Turf War multiplayer to a loot‑driven action RPG.

A market comparison with Valve’s Steam Deck highlights the Switch 2’s lower price point (₱31,990 in the Philippines) and exclusive first‑party library versus the Deck’s larger but PC‑centric catalog and higher cost. Consumer debates in Brazil question whether upgrading from the original Switch is worthwhile after one year, with many praising titles like Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza.
