Nintendo Switch success stabilized Japanese console market

Analyst Serkan Toto, CEO of Kantan Games, suggests that the success of the Nintendo Switch may have prevented the collapse of the Japanese console market. Toto argues that if Nintendo had experienced a second commercial failure following the Wii U, the domestic console segment might have disappeared entirely as consumers shifted toward smartphones and PCs.

Nintendo currently holds approximately 70% of the video game content market share within the Japanese console segment. Globally, the Switch has reached 156.59 million units sold, approaching the historical sales record held by the PlayStation 2, which stands at 160 million units.

In Japan, the console's success is attributed in part to its portability, which suits local commuting habits. The platform's dominance has helped maintain a dedicated hardware market in a region facing heavy competition from mobile gaming.
